Adega Mayor’s altitude, Comendador Reserva

Another FOODEX JAPAN 2025 encounter.

At FOODEX Japan 2025, they really pulled out the stops in the wine section. Just take a look at the above pictures. As it turned out, that was my last stop, so I did not have enough time to talk to all of the vintners and merchants about their products. Just before closing time, however, I had the opportunity of tasting a few Portuguese wines, including the one pictured below. I was impressed and tasted it a few weeks later at home with the other member of the drinkingjapan.org team.

Sensory Evaluation: The wine is deep ruby in color with a pronounced aroma of dark berries, which beckons the drinker to imbibe a generous mouthful of this Portuguese red, a blend, of course, which is typical for Portugal. We felt as if we were rusticating on a sultry day in late summer. This idyllic prelude to consumption was temporarily jarred by the untamed tannins that assaulted our palates. This was very curious, because when it was tasted at FOODEX, the tannins were well integrated. Fortunately, we decided to let it breathe for about forty-five minutes, and when we returned to it, the tannins had softened, and the astringency was gone. The ABV is 13%. If you see this wine in your wineshop, give it a try.
