By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea
You and I, you and I, oh! how happy we’ll be,
When each wave comes a rolling in
We will duck or swim,
And we’ll float and fool around the water,….
This lyrical excerpt from the 1914 hit song is the perfect way to kick off our entry on this “underwater wine” from Croatia. But before we get into that, permit us to make a few comments related to the song. What should be immediately noticeable to the reader is how “me” works better than “I” in this context. The latter does not exactly roll off the tongue, does it? But we’ll let the grammarians duke that one out for now.
The other thing we would like to say about this catchy little ditty concerns the location of its composition, Reisenweber’s Brighton Beach Casino, an institution with more than a tenuous connection to one of our favorite characters—Diamond Jim Brady. Yes, he of the voracious appetite and precious stones.

As some of our readers undoubtedly know, aging wine in the sea is becoming a thing. Some see this as a marketing gimmick, but we don’t. Given conditions down below—constant temperature and protection from sunlight, to name two—it is reasonable to expect that Davy Jones’ locker—think of the wine found in shipwrecks—would present a hospitable place for aging vino.

Sensory Evaluation: Coral Wine: Weingut Blesius Mosel Riesling Trocken 2020 (Graacher Domprobst) is a dry wine, whose grapes were sourced, as the name suggests, from Mosel, and our Riesling lovers will know all about that, of course. It is an exceptional drink, with lots of peach, honeysuckle, and elderflower on the nose. There is an excellent balance between sweetness and acidity. The finish is medium (+), and the ABV is 12%. The wine has spent some time under the sea off the coast of Croatia, which we believe accounts for its finesse. If you sit by the sea long enough, perhaps Davy will smile upon you and one of his bottles—maybe one like this—will float ashore.
