Savor the Sakura

Prince Genji and Princess, Katsukawa Shunsen, ca. 1820s

Nothing can be more visually representative of Japan than cherry trees, with the exception of Mt. Fuji, of course. Their delicate and ephemeral blossoms have served as inspiration for countless artists and writers. Now, we can add at least one brewmaster to the list. Arakura Sakura Ale, a product sold exclusively in Yamanashi Prefecture, contains malted barley, hops, cherry leaves, and Irish moss (a.k.a., Chondrus crispus). It has an ABV of 5%.

Sensory Evaluation: This is a cloudy, straw-colored beverage with just a hint of pink. Nose: Very appealing floral notes of medium (+) intensity. Some cotton-candy sweetness. Palate: hops predominate. Refreshing. A harbinger of spring.

Note: This is a seasonal brew. Catch it while you can.
