Relief on a Hot August Night

I am writing this entry on a hot night in August. No, I am not blaming anthropological global warming for this! It’s just hot and humid in Tokyo at this time of year. I do not know when I will upload this piece, but there is good a chance that it will be at cooler times. Summer is a period when the living is easy, so the song goes, but it is also a time when people turn to things light, cold, and not too weighty, or serious. Consider summer stock. One would not expect to encounter Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus or Philip Weiss’s Marat/Sade, or, if you prefer the full title (and who doesn’t?), The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade. Chew on that for a while.

And so it came to pass, that I turned to this unpretentious drink from a Mexican maker of sugar-cane spirits. In future, I will write about their more serious output, but tonight, I will keep it light. This can be drunk straight or used as a base for cocktails. It is water, sugar-cane spirit, sugar, and a piece of cane thrown in to make things a bit more exciting. Chew on that, too. It is 20% ABV, tastes of sugar, and is good straight or in cocktails. I tried it both ways: first, as is: then, with apple juice. It did the trick! Think I’ll slip in a DVD and watch The Wild Bunch now.
