Malaysia is one of our favorite countries, for reasons too numerous to mention in this short blog entry. Recently, we had the opportunity to visit one of their showcase cities, Malacca, lots of history, good restaurants, clean streets, and a safe environment. We do not know whether anyone else has picked up on this, but it bears a certain resemblance to New Orleans, one example of which is the cemetery featured in the picture below.
One sunny afternoon, we left the city center to visit a toddy bar. A quick search using Google Maps for “Toddy Shop” will call up the location and additional information. One of us wrote about this beverage, which is closely associated with Tamil Nadu, the southern Indian state, and its diaspora. We had a wonderful time during our short visit. The proprietor served us a generous tasting of his creation and gave us much information about the drink. It is milky in color, slightly sweet and fruity on the palate, with some slight carbonation from ongoing fermentation. The drink is quite refreshing. When drunk early, the nose is acceptable; however, if consumed the next day or, presumably several days after purchase, the smell is disconcerting, though the alcohol can be expected to increase, perhaps to as high as 15%.
When in Malacca, why not pay them a visit?
